Amphibians

Amphibians are tetrapod (four-legged), ectotherm animals, which means that they rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. There are more than 6000 species around the world, and all are more or less aquatic even though they can live out of water. Their eggs do not have a protective membrane as do birds or reptiles, so they need to lay them in the water or close to it, to ensure the survival of their young. The majority of amphibian species therefore have an aquatic larval stage, often followed by a metamorphosis to reach the adult stage, equipped with lungs.
