Diet
Herbivore, feeding mainly on fruits and seeds of aquatic or terrestrial plants but also on stems and leaves. In the first weeks of their life, the ducklings also feed on insects more rich in protein.
Lifespan
Up to 20 years in the wild.
Reproduction
From the age of 1 year old, mating and egg laying takes place between April and May. The female generally lays 12 eggs (10-15), at a rate of 1 per day, which she incubates for 27 to 37 days. The duckling’s first flight takes place 55 to 70 days later.
Predators
Eggs and ducklings can be the prey of skunk, raccoon, and certain birds like crow, seagulls and birds of prey.
