Diet

Herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants or plants growing on the shore of water plans. Will also eat molluscs, amphibians and aquatic insects especially during the molting period or when vegetation is scarce.

Lifespan

Around 20 years in the wild and pver 25 years in captivity.

Reproduction

Sexual maturity is reached at 3 years old. Egg laying takes place in April and May. The female incubates 5 to 12 eggs for about 36 days. The young can fly at 4 to 5 months old.

Predators

Eagle, fox, pike, and snapping turtle can prey upon the young.
