Omnivorous, its diet consists of small molluscs, snails, shellfish, aquatic insects, larvae, aquatic plants and seeds.

Reproduction
Monogamous, couples come together in February or March. The female builds the nest on the ground in the spring. It lays from 5 to 13 eggs. Incubation lasts 23 to 28 days. Young can fly between 53 and 61 days old.
Predators
The northern pike is a predator of ducklings. In the North, the arctic fox, gulls and jaegers attack the eggs and the incubating females. The common raven is also a frequent predator of eggs.
