Carnivore, feeding on 90% toads and frogs, but also earthworms, small fish, tadpoles and salamanders. Occasionally it consumes small birds, rodents, insects and spiders.
Up to 10 years in the wild.
From 2 or 3 years old, mating takes place between the end of March and May and sometimes even into the autumn. Ovoviviparous, the female births between 3 to 80 babies (usually 11 to 26) between July and September which are independent as soon as being born.
Raccoon, skunk, red fox and lynx, as well as certain birds like buzzards, heron and crow. In water, it can also be the prey of certain fish and bullfrog.
