Diet

Herbivorous, feeding on lichen, moss, grasses, bark, leaves and twigs.

Lifespan

Up to 12 years in the wild and 15 in captivity.

Canadian status

According to the region and the subspecies, the status varies from special concern, to threatened to endangered.

Quebec status

The woodland caribou forest-dwelling ecotype is vulnerable and the mountain ecotype is threatened

Reproduction

From 18 to 30 months old, mating takes place between late September and early November. A single fawn is born in June after an approximate 7 ½ month gestation period and is weaned after 4 months.

Predators

Grey wolf and grizzly bear. Fawns can be the prey of Canada Lynx, black bear, wolverine and golden eagle.
